So, We're buying a theatre and making it into an Art centre. Initial pipe dreams include: A full size stage for live shows, fully removable seats so it can double as a none alcoholic night club, as well as a projection booth and drop down screen for short film premieres and a dollar theatre as well as classic film showings. An art gallery in the lobby. A small recording and editing studio and a darkroom upstairs and -at some point- a café next door...
Art and entertainment is everywhere here. Unfortunately, here you have to already be somebody to showcase anything. So the whole idea of this is to have somewhere for the youth to go, to showcase their work. To network with other artists, to make a name for themselves and most of all just to hang out in a fun environment where they can feel comfortable being themselves. Somewhere safe to express and release themselves artistically rather than in a damaging way, such as cutting, drug abuse or suicide. And somewhere to go to keep them off the streets and out of trouble... Something that neither of us had as a teenager.
It's a long shot, and as one of my ever sensible friends pointed out: "no one your age has ever done anything like this before" To that I just smiled and said: "That just means we're too young to know that certain dreams are impossible." So here we are dreaming of shadows. But who's to say that we can't give these shadows shape? It's true we're young. But we're not naive, we know what the world can do to you, it can break you down into nothing, into no one, completely anonymous. But we also know that Art can save you from that, because Art is Love.
We are broken, but still here. We are lost, but not alone. We are artists, saved by the love that so many share despite distance, culture and time.
But most of all we are dreamers.
We are Dreamers Anonymous.
